ON OUR IPOD: Singer Aurora Barnes

Two weeks ago we had the pleasure of experiencing a concert by young chanteuse Aurora Barnes (above), a NYC native and graduate of the city’s famed High School of the Performing Arts.
Tonight Barnes is back, this time with an intimate performance way Downtown at the 169 Bar on the Lower East Side.
Although still young, Barnes — who both pens and performs her songs — betrays a sense of artistic complexity and maturity well beyond her years. As a composer, her songs are both potent and surprising. As a singer, her voice is equally lusty and nuanced.
And while Barnes’ stage presence is still in development, she’s a natural beauty with hints of Edie Brickell, Natalie Merchant and — dare we even say — the queen Joni Mitchell herself.
Best of all, she’s a friend of Transracial JS — which of course makes her our girl too.
Give her a listen.
