800px-052607-009-smp Although it may have been derided as an aesthetic eye-sore by everyone from Frank Gehry (who actually designed it) to more lower-profile haters, the imminent closure of ’80s mall Santa Monica Place is a sad statement to the state of the Southern California economy. Insiders insist the complex — set for imminent demolition — will reopen as a higher-end retail center. With shoppers staying home nationwide, we suspect the site — minutes from the hip Third Street Promenade — will remain empty for sometime.

However, look here for a peek at the supposed Santa Monica Place to come.
