shah-abbas-002 Thirty years ago this month the Iranian royal family was overthrown and the era of the Ayatollahs officially began. But long before the current regime, Iran enjoyed many-splendored years of glory during the reign of Shah Abbas from (1587-1629). This period — during a time of both Ottoman and European advancement — is considered imperial Iran’s greatest and will soon be given light at London’s British Museum in their exhibition “Shah ‘Abbas: The Remaking of Iran”. On though June 14, the exhibition includes paintings, carpets, porcelain, silks and Islamic pieces — including the picture above of Abbas from the wall of Chihil Sutan Palace in Isfahan — that give color to this truly colorful era.
