New York Fashion Week: Africa in Bryant Park

african8 While we were on our Staycation this past weekend, New York Fashion Week staged yet another example of “Obama”-chic: The first-ever African Fashion Collective collection. And it was fierce! Not only were there sub-Saharan supermodels like Alek Wek and Liya Kebede, but 80s glamazon Grace Jones worked the catwalk.
Represent!
The entire affair was the handiwork of Nigerian media mogul Nduka Obaigbena, who sponsored the show along with Arise magazine — which featured designs (including the shirts above) by everyone from Xuly-Bet of Mali to South Africa’s Stone Cherrie to MoMo by Nigeria’s Fati Asibuela. The event received much love from the 600 fashion fans, buyers and scribes at attendance.
Let’s hope this becomes a seasonal staple.
