Botero on the Block

Despite the art market’s continued downward spiral, smaller-sized institutions have not been deterred from mounting major exhibitions. One of the most eye-catching opens this week at London’s Thomas Gibson Fine Art where a collection of 17 works by Fernando Botero are on display — and on sale. You probably know Botero’s work: Fancifully-depicted colorful cherubs often (like 1932’s Trainer, above) elegantly-uniformed in some sort of full-scale regalia. Who knew that the famous Colombian artist had NO works on display in any major British public museum? If you have (at least) a cool quarter million to spare, you can begin to collect your own Boteros at this week’s show.
