YOU SHOULD BE READING: The Book of Night Women

Jamaican author Marlon James’ new novel The Book of Night Women is having a multi-media moment — and with good reason.

Its layered and complex narrative takes place during Jamaica’s slave days and sees James masterfully — and effectively — providing voices for nine different female characters.

A 19th century tale of youth and rebellion, The Book of Night Women is raw and often vulgar — debunking what James has called “the poetry of poverty.”

Read James’ recent New York Times review or better yet, watch and hear the author talk about his creative process with host Kurt Andersen on this week’s episode of Studio 360.

Good Stuff!
