AT RISK: East Asian Airspace
North Korea’s frosty relations with its southern neighbor are likely to get even chillier following warnings by leaders in Pyongyang that it could not guarantee the safety of commercial aircraft flying in its airspace.
This week North Korea will test launch its ultra long-range Taepodong-2 missile (pictured above) as part of it latest round of military exercises. Unwilling to reveal the launches’ exact wheres/whens, North Korean officials have advised commercial airplane to stay away.
So far, international biggies such as Singapore Airlines along with Korean national carriers are taking the threat seriously — with plans to divert relevant aircraft.
The move is highly unusual and reflects North Korea’s ongoing status as perhaps the world’s most-rogue nation.
