AT RISK: Hmong Women
The situation for Hmong women in the Sapa region of Northern Vietnam is not looking good!
According to a report in this week’s Economist, young Hmong women are being kidnapped and ferried across the border in to China where they are sold as brides!
Apparently, Hmong female beauty is highly revered throughout the region.
But this admiration is resulting in Hmong girls being kidnapped for horny husbands-to-be across the frontier.
Very not so nice.
Compounding the problem is a serious shortage of women in China itself. It seems as if decades of one-child-only population controls — paired with a cultural reverence for sons — has resulted in a lack of marriage-aged Chinese women.
Throw in some well-armed — and unwell-intentioned — human traffickers and you’ve got a Hmong girl kidnapping situation.
Apparently both China and Vietnamese authorities are well aware of the problem.
We hope they shut this evilness down!
