DAILY TRANSRACIAL: Rabbi Capers Funnye

In yet another example of unexpected Black/Jewish mixes, The New York Times Magazine profiles today Rabbi Capers Funnye, the head of the 200-member Beth Shalom B’nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation of Chicago and whom they refer to as “Obama’s Rabbi”.

Apparently, Rabbi Funnye is the first cousin of First Lady Michelle Obama — once removed — and came to Judaism later in life following his upbringing as a Methodist.

The Times profile shed light on Rabbi Funnye’s important role both in Chicago’s Jewish and African American communities and his unique ability to help them both create important alliances.
