DAILY TRANSRACIAL: Y-Love
Brooklyn-based — but Baltimore-raised — Y-Love is just one of the many players on the burgeoning Orthodox rap scene. But he is perhaps the only Ortho-rapper of color, having first embraced Judaism as a kid before subsequently converting to the faith.
Today, the highly-devout Y-Love not only dons prayers shawls to begin each day, he raps in a mix of English, Hebrew, Yiddish and even Aramaic, the ancient language of the Talmud.
It’s all skills he picked up in Jerusalem during a stint of intense Yeshiva study where he actually discovered rap from a fellow student — and hip-hop fan — originally from Long Island.
Returning to Brooklyn, open-mic sessions soon followed, as did original rhymes and the rest — as they say — is hip-hop history.
We wish Y-Love a happy Pesach and platinum success.
