WE SALUTE: Aseel Al-Awadhi of Kuwait

Big news coming out of the Persian Gulf where politician Aseel Al-Awadhi is one of four women elected to Kuwait’s new Parliament — the first time women have ever reached such lofty political positions in the nation.

The news was confirmed by the Kuwait News Agency and is another step toward gender equality in one of the most conservative regions on the planet.

The elections come as Kuwait attempts to shore up its struggling democracy in the wake of the global financial slowdown and domestic Royal Family meddling. MP Al-Awadhi is an American-trained, 38 year-old professor of philosophy and critical thinking at Kuwait University.
Here’s hoping she — and the rest of her nation’s political newcomers — help Kuwait remain on the path toward political, social and cultural reform.
