WE CAN’T WAIT FOR: V — The Remake

Posted in MEDIA MOMENT, NEWS on May 19, 2009 by transracial

Even though some of our fellow bloggers are not feeling it, we are completely stoked about the remake of campy ’80s TV show V — which debuts on ABC next season.

Along with a clutch of silly other new shows slated for release, ABC has just debuted THESE two new V previews — and we think they actually look kinda good.

The guessing game has never been more fun.

MOVIE MOMENT: Pressure Cooker

We’re liking the look and sound of Pressure Cooker — a new documentary that opens on May 27th.

While the film does have a “we’ve heard it all before” feel, its look into the lives of minority kids in North Philly hoping success in the kitchen will get them out of the ghetto is novel, innovative and compelling. Heart-warming too.

Click HERE for a look at Pressure Cooker’s preview and decided whether its initial positive buzz is worth the early accolades.

READY FOR LAUNCH: Vibe Magazine Spin-Off “The Most”

Posted in MEDIA MOMENT, NEWS on May 11, 2009 by transracial

Despite the sad demise of dozens of magazines over the past 12 months, hip-hip bible Vibe is launching a spin off this summer — The Most.

This biannual print and web publication will debut on June 16 with an initial newsstand run of 300,000. Its accompanying website will go live a few weeks earlier.

So what is The Most mostly about? Embracing a “tabloid-themed” POV, the magazine will likely be a blend US Weekly and People with Vibe and The Source.

We’re staying tuned.

The good guys over at Entertainment Weekly have given light to the hilarious newish website — Thisiswhyyourefat — which provides lushly photographed evidence of why we’re fighting the battle of the bulge.

Totally viewer-generated, its regularly updated pages include uber-sized items such as the “super hamburger” above, along with an array of gourmet-to-gross fried, baked, sauced, whipped items from around the country.

The site is a total hot mess — and our latest on-line addiction.

TREND ALERT: Afghani Theater

Posted in MEDIA MOMENT, NEWS on April 13, 2009 by transracial

London’s Tricycle Theatre will late this week see the beginning of “The Great Game” — a two month-long festival celebrating theater coming out of Afghanistan.

One of the Tricycle’s most ambitious maneuvers yet, the event features 15 new plays specially commissioned for the Festival. The plays span literally centuries of Afghani history and showcase the nation in three key periods: The late-Ottoman era, the Soviet occupation and post-9/11.

The series is decidedly political and also includes short films and theatrical monologues.

Most of the authors and playwrights are noticeably British, reflecting the long cultural journey battered Afghanistan still faces.
