Mexican-American pianist and composer Arturo O’Farrill will be the man of the hour tomorrow night when he leads the kick-ass African Latin Jazz Orchestra during two nights of performances at Symphony Space on the Upper West Side.

The concerts come just as O’Farrill — whose Orchestra is based at Jazz @ Lincoln Center — returns from a successful tour of Cuba.

It’s our first time seeing O’Farill (above) in action and we’re stoked to hear his mellifluous mix of strings, piano and percussion — much of it influenced by his legendary father, Chico, who previously led the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra.

It’s a Gringo-Latino musical must-see and we’re keen to hear what O’Farrll fils has on his repertoire tomorrow night.

WE CAN’T WAIT TO TRY: Inakaya

inakaya Tomorrow marks the debut of Inakaya, the first New York restaurant from master Japanese chef Kozo Matsuo. Located in the new — and newly leveraged — Renzo Piano-designed New York Times building, the 3,000 square foot eatery is anchored around the grill-in-your-face robata concept. Diners peruse a central eight foot high ice shelf packed with fresh meat, seafood and veggies which are then handed off to nimble yakikata (AKA grill dudes) who slip them on the barbie. It’s all fired up and washed down with sake to be enjoyed in the pale wooden dining room.

Yum!

noa3 Readers from yesterday will recall our attempts to interview singers Noa (above) and Mira Awad for Time magazine — the (Jewish and Arab) Israelis who will represent their nation at Eurovision in Moscow in May. We’ll, we just got off the phone with them both and can report they are as eloquent and elegant (at least via voice) as they are in photos and videos. This week the duo performed a special song from Jerusalem for Dutch TV — a musical sneak peek at the kind of coexistence that Mira and Noa are fighting for.

Good for them!

Giving Peace a Chance

953profil02_hh1 Finally some good news coming out of the Holy Land. Israeli Arab singer Mira Awad (above) has been selected to represent Israel in this May’s Eurovision contest in Moscow. It is the first time Israel has ever selected an Arab to sing on its behalf and Awad — a local stage and TV starette — will be sharing the stage Transracially with Jewish-Israeli singer, Noa. Both have worked together before and Noa — who’s sung with big shots like Sting — has been a long-time peace activist type. We’ve met Mira and can confirm she’s totally rad. And our niece is named Noa, so clearly that’s all good.

Right now both, says her manager, “are in the studio recording for Eurovision”. Perhaps. We do know that Transracial’s attempts to interview the pair are resulting in annoyance and frustration and considering Israel’s often dismal Eurovision scores, we hope they wisely milk their media moment with grace and intelligence.

UPDATE: We’re speaking with them tomorrow!
